Latest Blog: You'd better shape up ...
We do a fair bit of trend work here because Halo allows us to see the direction of travel for businesses and organisations. Also because we work with our clients for a long time we can see from the outside in how the World affects them, this allows us a unique insight in to the phenomen of how it is the universe of events which creates change as well as the organisation themselves. What we do is help businesses and organisation make that flow of change work for them not against, so what is the "flow" at the moment, and how can they help you?
Get your systems and processes working for you, rather than you working for them
Processes when they are the right ones, applied expertly and with precison strength of touch are brilliant. However things are changing very fast and what worked a few months ago could be a real bind right now. Therefore it is important to rigorously review process to make sure that they are flexible enough to move with the times and exact enough to deliver benefits to those using them and to your customers and users.
We are moving in to a period where business and organisations will need to be very much more accountable for their outcomes than they have ever been. There is a distinction to be made here; in the past processes have been king, so if an organisation could show they have got the process right they might have been let off the hook, this will not be the case in the next decade. What an organisation achieves in the way of service, value - either for money or for its customers and shareholders, staff contribution and service to the community will count for more than how much it outputs in processes.
Commnicate more with actions, less with words
We have some of the very best customers at The Halo Works. They are enlightened, sensible and very good at what they do. What they also are, is humble. They come to us when they see something which they think needs looking at and can do better, and this is what makes them so outstanding as service providers, be they public or private sector organisations. This humility ensures that it is their actions which speak the loudest not their gorgeous communication campaigns (although some have those too). We work hard here to ensure time and cost effective market research tools are available to find out what the issues are, then the most money, time and effort can be speant on fixing what has been discovered.
This is the future. Spend as little as possible on communication, and that means time as well as money, but as much as you can on implementing actions which make a difference. Spin is a dirty word in great organisations, actions are the way forward
Shape your organisation to fit the need and deliver the benefits
There is a natural shape to great organisations but what has happened in the last decade is they have been pushed out of shape by external factors which don't help deliver the benefits they need to deliver. The easiest way of understanding your best shape is to look at the line of sight from the benefits you need to deliver to ensure customers get what they are promised and work back through your processes from there. If you can go further and work back from customer's aspirations; in a couple of years time you will be really motoring. Once you have defined your shape, you can then look again at your processes an make sure you are running them with the right people, in the righ positions, doing the right job. Do this and whilst the next couple of years are unlikely to make you silly rich, you will have a great organisation, and after that who knows?
Put it into action
None of what we have suggested here is untested. We are researchers so of course we have put them in place in numerous places. They work, but they do need to be right when they are implemented, and monitored regularly. We have a nifty way of monitoring them and a tried and tested way of ensuring that organisations are able to focus on these areas and if you would like to hear how then please call us on 00 44 (0)1276 477445.
